After weeks of reading in short spurts, I finally finished The Help this morning. Oh my. I laughed, I cried. It was fantastic.
The Help is set in Jackson, Mississippi in the 1950s and 1960s. White families had black women helping them in their homes. A young white woman, Skeeter, is looking for a topic on which to write a novel. She decides to write an anonymous book depicting the life of the "help." She doesn't realize how dangerous this undertaking will be. She finds two black women, Aibileen and Minny, who agree to help her as she interviews more black women about their families. Some of the stories are harsh, full of horrible treatment. Other stories are heartwarming, tales of black women and the families that really, truly loved them.
Find this book and read it soon. It is a fantastic novel. I highly, highly recommend it!
I'm starting Same Kind of Different As Me today if I have time. Hopefully it'll be a great read as well!
